Merrit Island

April 16, 2019May 12, 2019 Matt

Long day yesterday, so I’m a few hours late posting. Quite the adventure from St. Cloud! It started off nice enough. I had a small breakfast out by the water at the motel and headed toward the coast. The first 18 miles was on Nova Road. It’s very straight, but no bike lanes. It was a pretty scary road, so I was happy the google maps had me take a 9 mile shortcut. That’s when things get interesting.

It started pleasant enough. It was a dirt road, but my Trike went through dirt easily last time I was on it. About 3 miles in I hit soft sand. I got stuck. It just slowed down progress as I just got off and walked the Trike to solid ground. This happened two more times. Then came the cows! Lots and lots of cows. There were about 3 miles of constant cows. I was getting a lot of stare downs! After a mile of going the wrong way (google maps), we hit the other “road”. It was a pasture!

A mile into the pasture we ran into a truck. It turned out we were trespassing on private property without realizing it. Instead of letting us finish the 3 miles left of the road, we were told to turn around. Fortunately, they put the Trike in the back of their pickup when we drove 7 miles back to Nova Road!

After 11 more miles on Nova Road, I hit Florida Highway 520 and was finally back in the bike lane! At that point we were 5 miles from the coast. What a 57 miles!!

After checking in to the cheap motel, Driver and I went fishing to wind down. I’m so happy to be back on the coast! A1A all day today! No more pastures and cows! New Smyrna tomorrow.

Until then…
