Happy New Year, everyone! It is officially 2019 and I am in full gear with my planning of Scooting4Donors. I will be posting on this page once a week with my progress until February 24. Then I will be posting daily to share my trip step by step. Today I just want to recap what this is all about…
The seed for Scooting4Donors was planted in the mid 80s when I was just a kid. I clearly remember watching The Terry Fox Story and being amazed that someone would want to travel across Canada after losing a leg to cancer. That movie never left my mind. Fast forward 25 years and 4 kidney transplants later and I am listening to a podcast story about traveling cross country trip and Terry Fox immediately comes to mind.
He helped raise over $23 million for cancer research the year he ran across Canada. I have been involved in the Atlanta transplant community since I was 16-years-old. If Terry can do what he did before the age of the internet and social media, what could I do for organ awareness now? So I decided to plan Scooting4Donors. I created a route, made plans for scooters, RVs/vans/trucks, hotels, funding and then…WTF am I thinking??? I can really pull this off! Can I?
That’s when I heard about a new movie coming on Netflix called Roll With Me. Roll With Me follows Gabriel Cordell as he treks across America in his manual wheelchair! The movie was amazing. Gabe made it in a wheelchair, why can’t I drive a mobility scooter? I can and I will!
So here I am planning my trip. I need funding. I need a scooter (or 2). I need a vehicle following me. I need a driver. I need A LOT. I know I can get it! I know I will get it! Now it’s time to get to work….
